This week we’ve found some great ways to entertain the whole family, with the celebration of a favourite children’s book, the annual Manchester Day festivities and more.

The Big Wild Rumpus ft. Maxine Peake
Hands up who remembers Maurice Sendak’s iconic children’s book, Where The Wild Things Are? It still remains the stuff of childhoods, and to celebrate its lasting charm, this weekend sees a nationwide Big Wild Rumpus, where people up and down the country will be roaring their terrible roars and gnashing their terrible teeth. Manchester’s leg takes over the grounds of the newly redeveloped Whitworth, where the story will be read aloud by the wonderful Maxine Peake, along with a host of family friendly creative activities. Come dressed as your favourite character from the book or get crafty and make your own mask on the day.

Creepy Crawly Show at Urban Exchange
Bob down to Ancoats this weekend, as the Urban Exchange hosts a fun-packed family afternoon across many of its outlets, perfect for anyone with a sense of adventure and a love of the outdoors. Along with a creepy crawly show featuring snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, lizards, giant African snails, hissing cockroaches, turtles and many more, there will also be a children’s activity table, plus info about Manchester scout groups and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Over 7s will be able to take part in a ‘Top of the World’ climbing wall challenge where Bear Grylls jackets are up for grabs for the fastest, whilst over 16s can get involved at Pure Gym’s bike challenge, this time with a chance to win free gym passes and other goodies.

Manchester Day
A celebration of what makes our city great, the annual, family-friendly Manchester Day returns this weekend. This year the event takes on the theme of ‘Game On’, meaning you’ll see the city become a playground of music, outdoor theatre and more throughout many of its public squares and open spaces. For 2015 they’re also teaming up with Guerrilla Eats to provide the food and drink, and for the cherry on top there’s the Manchester Day parade that will run through the heart of the city. Read our full preview here.
