Whoever said culture was inaccessible clearly hasn’t seen what’s on this week, where there’s a mighty fine selection of free activities spanning poetry, science and art. Get ready for some serious brain food.

Pass-on-a-Poem at The Portico Library
Curl up in the Cobden Corner of The Portico, where you can read your favourite published poem out loud or simply listen to what others have chosen to read. As an event that had been absent from Manchester for a few years now, The Portico welcomes the return of Pass-on-a-Poem by bringing it back as a regular monthly fixture for the library, where there will also be tea, coffee and homemade cake available to buy. Admission is technically free, but donations are welcomed (we say advised) in order to help secure the life of what is frankly a lovely, lovely idea.
Sat 17 Jan, The Portico, 57 Mosley Street, M2 3HY, 11am – 1pm, FREE (Donations recommended), www.eventbrite.co.uk

Exploring Light at Pi: Platform for Investigation at MOSI (pictured)
After launching last year, MOSI’s purpose built Pi: Platform for Investigation is back for 2015 to help visitors of all ages discover, marvel and explore the magic of the science around them. From this Saturday, it takes on the theme of ‘Inspiring, innovating, illuminating’, looking into the mysteries of light through levitating clouds, a laser that can copy a supernova, and more. The drop-in creative workshops will then continue, taking on different themes as the months progress, and featuring leading scientists, artists, technologists and researchers who will bring science to life via participatory, playful live experiments.
Sat 17 Jan, Museum of Science and Industry, Liverpool Road, M3 4FP, 10.30am – 3.30pm, FREE, www.mosi.org.uk
