New Public Art at Spinningfields
A new piece of public art is always a cause celibré and reminds us that art isn’t just something that exists in galleries, but that can form a living, breathing part of our everyday lives. This new piece, commissioned by the art boffins at the Castlefield Gallery, is entitled ‘Through No. 3’ and is a six-metre long brightly-coloured pyramidal corridor that visitors to its Spinningfields will be able to walk through, observing the world through its rainbow window panes. It’s only sticking around for a short time, so make sure you check it out while you get a chance.

Christmas Market at Anchor Coffee House
Sitting on the edge of Whitworth Park is this neat little coffee shop known as much for its outreach programmes and community work as it is for its fresh ground coffee. This weekend they’re holding a Christmas market, both to launch their new range of drinks and a suspended coffee scheme in aid of Manchester’s homeless community. It’s a market, so they’ll have stalls of all varieties selling: Cards, prints, trinkets, mulled cider/wine and, aptly, coffee beans. It’s a great way to check it this interesting and overlooked venue, pick up some goodies, and maybe help some people along the way.

Pop Up Homeware Shop at Terrace (pictured)
Springing up in Terrace’s upstairs room this weekend is this little store, presented by home furnishers Lowe & Co. They’ll be stocking all kinds of bits to liven up your home, featuring both new, handcrafted goods and characterful vintage treats. Stingy landlord furnished your flat with Ikea throughout? This is the ideal way to liven that up by picking out a piece unlike any other. Obviously, it costs to buy this stuff, but it’s entirely free to have a nosey. Can’t get anything this month? Worry not, they’re doing another pop up next weekend at Idle Hands on Piccadilly Approach.
Sat 28 Nov – Sun 29 Nov, Terrace, 43 Thomas Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M4 1NA. 10am – 7pm, www.skiddle.com

Owl Project at Manchester Museum
Art collective and Nerds du jour Owl Project present their latest piece – entitled ‘Rock Music’ – at Manchester Museum. Their usual work consists in producing object that are part musical instrument, part sculpture and for this new show they are looking towards the ancient process of flint knapping – where a piece of flint is sharpened on a rock – as practised by our stone age ancestors. The group will talk you through their elaborate flint synthesiser, which produces electronic sounds as it is refined and talk through some of the motivations behind their work as well as shedding light on how they bring these creations to life. This is free to attend, but booking via email is essential.
Sat 28 Nov, Manchester Museum, The University Of Manchester, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL. Tel: 0161 275 2634, 2pm – 3pm, www.manchester.ac.uk
