Following the Whitworth art gallery’s £15m transformation by MUMA architects in 2014, it’s become a sublimely peaceful space, filled with light and views of the park and trees. So where better to join hundreds of men and women, performing the opening ‘sun salutation’ sequence of many yoga traditions, as part of a global yoga movement. 108 cycles of bending and stretching are traditionally performed on this day each year to acknowledge the change in the seasons. Yogis can perform as many or as few sun salutations as they like, with tea and flapjacks on offer to those taking part. If 108 moves sounds like too many, the Whitworth hosts weekly yoga classes on a Thursday (meet at main entrance, 8.30am-9.45am, £5, bring your own mat) and Tai Chi on Wednesdays (meet at rear garden entrance, 8.30am–9.30am, £5, wear clothing for outdoors and indoors).
