Billed as a radiant celebration of Iberian colour and craft, the Galicia Symphony Orchestra arrives at The Bridgewater Hall on Mon 13 Apr with an impassioned, sunlit programme led by conductor Roberto González-Monjas and featuring the mercurial guitarist, Thibaut Garcia.
The evening opens with the folkloric inflections and ritualistic energy of Rogelio Groba’s Danzas meigas, before Manuel de Falla’s Three Dances from The Three-Cornered Hat herald a blaze of Andalusian flair.
The centrepiece of the programme, Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, is widely regarded as the greatest guitar concerto ever written, its plush textures and aching lyricism imbued with new life by Garcia’s virtuosity.
Then, Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose suite invites the audiences into a realm of enchanting, delicately etched fantasy, before Joaquín Turina’s Sinfonía sevillana unfolds in warm, expansive panoramas. Finally, Ravel brings the concert to a spellbinding conclusion with the indelible Boléro.
