The Science and Industry Museum’s upcoming new major exhibition invites visitors on an immersive journey into the incredible world of their senses.
Operation Ouch! Brains, Bogies and You offers the chance to delve deeper into how our brains interpret the world through the senses, with plenty of chances to test your own along the way.
Over 30 fun-filled interactives will be packed into the exhibition. Mini medics can explore their brilliant brains by banging on an eardrum, venturing into a massive eyeball and even taking a whiff of a “smell library” during a lively, interactive and playful adventure at the museum.
After entering Dr Chris’ brain headquarters through his giant ear, venture through all five senses with a variety of fun, hands-on experiences. Discover the secret senses that help us keep our balance, know when it’s time to sleep and even when to go for a wee.
The job of each of the key senses – hearing, touch, sight, taste and smell – will be explored from inside Dr Chris’ brain. Guests can even start their own chain reaction with dominoes to simulate how our nerves send messages, before chilling out in the relaxing Mindboosters zone where they can recharge and reconnect.
Visitors can test what they see, hear and feel in a series of illusions and find out if they can believe everything they sense. They can also get creative with colourful light beams and compete with their friends and families to identify all kinds of sounds, poke around inside a giant eyeball and join interactive games to find out how our sensory experiences can vary.
The science of our senses will also be showcased through fascinating objects from the Science Museum Group’s collection, including a brain-scanning ‘jedi’ helmet worn by children over 40 years ago, ear trumpets used to improve hearing before hearing aids came along, and even coins that were touched by Henry VIII and given to sick people, in the days when it was thought the touch of a king or queen could cure the sick.
Dr Chris and Dr Xand said: “Get ready to go on the adventure of a lifetime to find out all about our incredible senses and take a dive into the brain as we explore what makes our bodies so amazing.
“From earwax and bogies to brains and snot, make a date to be enjoyably disgusted and fascinated by this brand-new exhibition at the Science and Industry Museum. It’s going to be absolutely gross!”
Operation Ouch! Brains, Bogies and You is the second time that the hit BBC show is being brought to life through an exhibition at the Science and Industry Museum. It builds on the huge success of Operation Ouch! Food, Poo and You which closed in 2024, and saw visitors dive headfirst into digestion, celebrate the amazing inner workings of the human body and shatter taboos around poo.
In this latest instalment, the museum promises even more fun, silly and sometimes gross experiences, amazing objects from the Science Museum Group’s collection, and video appearances from world-renowned doctors which will guide audiences through this lively, interactive and playful adventure.
