The Northern Quarter’s creative hub Stevenson Square will be transformed into a pop-up park on the evening of Wed 19 Jun – all in the name of Clean Air Day 2019. Traffic will be diverted from Newton Street to Oldham Street for five hours from 5pm – 10pm as trees, astro turf, a speakers’ corner and a bandstand are temporarily installed to provide a flavour of what the area’s potential pedestrianisation could look like. This move is the latest in a continued effort to see the entirety of Stevenson Square transformed into a traffic-free pedestrianised zone aimed at encouraging sports and leisure activities. It’s a plan that was originated by Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and award-winning cyclist Chris Boardman that looks set to move forward as long as alternate bus routes through the area can be facilitated. The team behind this pop-up park are encouraging your support to increase its chances of becoming a permanent feature – so if you like the idea of a city centre chill out area, swing by and let the powers that be know!

Wed 19 Jun, Stevenson Square, The Northern Quarter, Manchester, 5pm – 10pm, Free.
