Government approves £20million plan to transform Chadderton over the next decade

Chadderton has been given the green light on a £20m Pride in Place regeneration project.

The funding marks the beginning of a decade of renewal to improve Chadderton. Bosses say the first four years of funding will prioritise local growth by supporting local businesses and community organisations through grant schemes, increasing safety with new CCTV, making improvements to public spaces and crossings, and restoring the historic Foxdenton Hall.

There will also be a focus on investment in youth provision in the area and projects which celebrate local pride. The approved plan has been shaped by local voices led by the Chadderton Neighbourhood Board, which has been set up to lead the work.

In addition to the £20m for Chadderton, £20m will also go to the Alt neighbourhood as part of the government’s Pride in Place strategy to build safer, more empowered and resilient communities.

Oldham Council Leader Cllr Arooj Shah said: “I’m absolutely delighted for the people of Chadderton and excited to see how plans develop. This investment is a huge milestone for the town, and a real show of confidence in Oldham as a whole. What makes this especially exciting is that local people will be right at the heart of shaping what happens next.

“This is just one part of a much bigger transformation happening right across the borough, with £20m funding earmarked for Alt, and of course the £450m regeneration of Oldham town centre.

“We are building a more confident Oldham, one where outside investment is rising, opportunities are growing, and residents are starting to feel the difference in their everyday lives.”

The Chadderton Neighbourhood Board includes residents, business owners, councillors and community leaders. It is chaired by Laura Windsor‑Welsh, Oldham Director of the charity Action Together.

Laura said: “Pride in Place is not just about buildings or infrastructure. It is about building social trust, inspiring ambition, and creating a town where everyone feels they belong. The Board is committed to ongoing community engagement, transparency, and delivering real change.”

Jim McMahon OBE MP said: “This is a really positive moment for Chadderton. Backed by the government, the Pride in Place programme will help bring forward improvements that matter to local people and support the strong sense of community we already have.
