January is notoriously a pretty blue month so we’ve rounded up some of the funniest shows coming to the city in the first month of the year to kick off 2020 with a bit of mirth.

Didsbury Comedy Club | Sun 5 Jan | 7.15pm | £10

The year kicks off with some pretty big hitters at Didsbury Cricket Club as Carl Hutchinson, Markus Birdman and Stephen Bailey head to the South of Manchester for the night. Though it takes place on a Sunday, we all know time and space doesn’t count in the haze of early January and this is one lineup well worth being a little worse for wear on a Monday morning.

MACFEST: Tez Ilyas | Sun 12 Jan | 5.45pm | FREE

MACFEST celebrates Muslim arts and culture with a night of big laughs courtesy of Tez Ilyas. 2019 was a huge year for Tez having starred in his very own television programme ‘The Tez O’Clock Show’ on Channel 4 and his honest and hilarious take downs of Islamaphobia going viral more times than we could count. A new monthly comedy night kicks off at The Font, Chorlton in January promising an early week pick-me-up, and if the bill for their first show is anything to go off, it’s sure to work a treat. Phoenix Nights star Archie Kelly will be joining Britain’s Got Talent finalist Daliso Chaponda with resident MC Tony Vino. To further entice you there are some great drinks deals too.

Maisie Adam: Hang Fire | Thu 23 Jan | 7.30pm | £10

Another comedian who had a big 2019, building on the Best Newcomer nomination she garnered the year before she appeared on 8 Out of 10 Cats, and did the rare double bill of Have I Got News For You and Mock the Week in the same night. Adam is a comedian heading for big things and this sophomore show was critically-acclaimed at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe. One to watch for sure.
