Lockdown restrictions are starting to lift, with some shops opening up this week along with the potential for more (socially distanced) opportunities to see friends and family. There are still loads of digital events going on, so we’ve rounded up a few of the best things to do at home this week, including a digitise at-home workout/club night and a screening of four short films by Northern trans artists.
Trans Up North is highlighting the work of four trans filmmakers from the North as part of their Trans Vegas Digital festival. The screening of the short films will be followed by a Q&A with the artists themselves.
This one-off live event, part of HOME’s Homemakers series, brings together a virtual gathering of women performing a new kind of choreography for the digital age. Choreographed by Sasha Milavic Davies and accompanied by a piece by composer Lucy Railton, this fascinating contemporary performance shouldn’t be missed.
This marathon home workout from Manchester club night Digitise combines partying with exercise, all from your own home. You can tune in to their radio station with a line-up of some of their best-loved DJs and join in their public Zoom call to see the DJs in action.
If lockdown is getting in the way of meeting new people and making connections locally, this event from Manchester kayaking group The Paddling Pals might be perfect for you. Whether or not you’ve ever been kayaking (or ever plan to go kaykaking), this event will let you hear some interesting stories from new people and get chatting with others in the area.
If it was a normal year, The Big Issue North would be gearing up for The Big Busk – their touring mini-festival that has featured acts like Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly. Unfortunately 2020 is no normal year – however that hasn’t stopped the Big Issue North from bringing us a little live music. From noon – 10pm on Saturday 20 June, viewers can tune into the magazine’s Instagram account to catch the likes of Everything Everything, Ren Harvieu, Self Esteem and Blackpool’s own Karima Francis, who has taken on curation duties for this year’s at-home event. Topping the night off will be DJ Clint Boon who will host an evening set from 9pm. The entire evening’s entertainment is free to watch – but donations are available. Explore the full line-up by picking up a copy of this week’s issue.
Manchester Art Gallery’s Derek Jarman exhibition has been sadly postponed due to lockdown, but they’ve made some resources available digitally so you can still get a taste of the work of the legendary artist-activist. Jordan’s Dance, one of Jarman’s early Super-8 films, has been restored and is available to watch online for a limited time and there are also interview transcripts and a documentary.
