The launch of a new arts publication I Am Not Limited By Age I Am Freed By It at The Whitworth Gallery is just one of our picks of free things to do in Manchester this week.

Plastic Bag Crocheting at Reclamation Room | Mon 6 Jan | 6.30pm

If, like me, you’ve got a kitchen cupboard full of plastic bags sat festering at home, then Oldham’s Reclamation Room café has the perfect use for them. Bring your old unwanted plastics to the café this Monday evening, and they will be turned into bright, recycled mats through the magic of crochet. This isn’t just a great way of recycling unwanted waste, but the mats themselves go to help local rough sleepers.

Abracadabra Printing Demo at John Rylands Library | Tue 7 Jan | 11.15am - 11.30am

John Rylands Library’s historical printing press winds up for its first run of 2020. This short demo looks at the relationship between words and magic in folklore, looking at the history of using language to heal and ward off evil spirits, whilst also giving you a chance to see the printing press in action.

I Am Not Limited By Age I Am Freed By It at The Whitworth | Thu 9 Jan | 6pm - 8.30pm

On Thursday evening, The Whitworth hosts this event as part of their Thursday Lates series, a new performance piece from former Alexandra Arts artist-in-residence Ekua Bayunu, as well as the launch of new publication I Am Not Limited By Age I Am Freed By It. This was commissioned by anti-discrimination charity The Baring Foundation, as part of project focusing on artists over fifty. Ekua invites playful drag queen Pearl Esquire to both host the evening and embody its theme of growing old defiantly.
