A documentary screening and Q&A with descendants of the victims of the Peterloo massacre is just one of our picks of free things to do in Manchester this week.
On Wednesday evening, Piccadilly Records hosts this free party to celebrate the end of 2019 and reflect on the past 12 months in record releases. This party features staff DJs, prizes and in-store discounts, as well as a few seasonally mandatory mince pies. You’ll also be able to pick up a free wristband gaining you access to the evening festivities at Night & Day Café, which promises more DJs and even some secret live acts.
Also on Wednesday evening, The Science and Industry Museum hosts this free, adults-only after hours look at their new solar science exhibition. The Sun looks at animals’ relationship with the heavenly body, as well as featuring an inflatable planetarium and craft workshops where you can make your own rainbow sunglasses. You’ll also be able to catch renowned stilt-walking act the Mirror Divas, who’ll be wandering around the museum in their fantastic mirrorball costumes.
All day Thursday, the Z-Arts art centre in Hulme will be hosting this exciting event. Skin In The Game is one of the outcomes of the three-year-long Diverse Actions project, which aims to champion a new generation of diverse performance artists. This multidisciplinary event incorporates performance, workshops and screenings from artists such as Washington DC’s Season Butler and Hetain Patel, whose work has previously appeared in the Tate Modern and at the Venice Biennial.
Struggling to find the perfect Christmas gift? Get yourself down to Manchester thrift store staple Afflecks Palace on Thursday to get involved with their late-night Christmas shopping party which will see the iconic Northern venue stay open until 9pm. All of the stalls housed within the building will remain open late into the evening, with promises of mulled wine, samples, live art and DJ sets from local disc spinners on offer too. What’s more, a handful of local creatives will be on hand during Afflecks After Dark to help you find the perfect bespoke gift this December, from pet portraits and personalised cards from Sunflowers by the Sea, to Manchester Bee baubles and laser-cut tree decorations – you’re bound to find something you like.
