A performance of Mark Murphy’s play Small Histories at Lloyds Bank on Market Street is just one of our picks of free things to do in Manchester this weekend.
Manchester Print Fair returns this weekend, this time coming to Manchester Cathedral. Dozens of local exhibitors will be presenting everything from prints and zines to tote bags and mugs – all carrying distinctive illustrations. They’ll also be serving up festive food and drink, so this is the perfect opportunity to get in the spirit of the season and pick up a truly unique Christmas gift.
Part of Design Manchester 2019, textile designer Laura Slater comes to the The Whitworth Gallery on Saturday afternoon to discuss her recent work PROCESS I PATTERN I PRINT I PURPOSE. This large-scale collaborative piece, created alongside artist Mawuena Kattah, drew from its creator’s family history and was developed through research into The Whitworth’s own vast textile archives.
Withington’s Fuel Café Bar hosts an evening of socialist songs and poetry. Radical Folk invites local singers and artists to perform their own work, as well as some traditional workers’ anthems. You’re invited to join in as well, with open mic slots and big, warm sing-a-longs.

Theatre group Out of Kilter presents a play in an unusual space on Friday evening, with a production of Mark Murphy’s Small Histories being staged in the Market Street branch of Lloyds Bank. Murphy’s play has already been performed at Touchstones Rochdale and the Bury MET earlier this year, and follows the lives and stories of six generations of women across 100 years, through monologue, dialogue and song.
