Yes the weather may be gloomy and yes, summer may be nearly over, but don’t fret, as there are heaps of things you can do around the city to boost your spirits and your bank balance.

From a brand-new exhibition at Manchester Cathedral to a funky choir evening at Factory International – here’s our rundown for the best free things to do in Manchester this week…

Leaving an Impression X Greater Manchester Youth Network | Manchester Cathedral | Tue 9 Sep

Care-experienced and asylum-seeking young people from across Greater Manchester are sharing their powerful stories through self-portraits in Leaving an Impression X Greater Manchester Youth Network, open until next Monday at Manchester Cathedral.

Inspired by medieval “reading through feeling” techniques, the multi-media works explore identity and emotion through touch, mapping personal journeys and life-changing moments across the region.

The exhibition, led by Dr Martha Baldon and supported by GMYN, offers a unique, deeply personal glimpse into the lives of its young creators. Visitors can also contribute to an interactive map
