On Monday, it’s Burns Night, which is the perfect time to re-connect with loved ones from north of the border. Once you’ve finished your Burns supper (and addressed your haggis), we’ve compiled a list of fantastic free things to do in Manchester this week, which includes a live-streamed concert from the RNCM, an online arts festival from Working Class Movement Library and much, much more.
Watch some of the next generation in concert as two ensembles from the Royal Northern College of Music’s Wind and Brass department continue their Thursday Lates series into 2021. Compered by percussionist and broadcaster Simone Rebello, you’ll hear The Whitworth Septet and Quora Flutes in music from Lili Boulanger, to Wade in the Water. There’s something for everyone here.
This exhibition explores Chapel Street, the road which links the great cities of Manchester and Salford. Originally a walking tour, the guide will be taken online for audiences to tune into. Featuring specially commissioned pieces by installation artists, graphic designers and animators – this is one for Manchester lovers and the artistically curious alike.
When lockdown hit, suddenly our venues fell silent – or did they? What do these usually-bustling institutions sound like without their usual footfall? This is the question Manchester-based composer Jaydev Mistry asks in this audiovisual exploration of a sonic adventure around a deserted HOME.

If you’re missing the Burns Night festivities, tune in to this folk music jamboree which is sure to get you dancing. Band of Burns is a collaboration between twelve artists from all over the world, including members of The Breath, The Langan Band, and former Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Ríoghnach Connolly. Pour yourself a whisky (or maybe an Irn Bru) and join the party, recorded live at the famous Wilton’s Music Hall.
