As we inch ever closer towards autumn, lots of Manchester venues have opened back up and are hosting socially distanced events to get the city back on its feet again. There are still plenty of virtual events taking place too, so there’s something for everyone going on at the moment – we’ve rounded up the best free things to do in Manchester this week, including a screening of Ghibli classic My Neighbor Totoro and a virtual yoga class for beginners.

Live Cinema III: The ReOpening | Mon 14 Sep | 1pm - 6pm

This online event invites you to reflect on the impact of lockdown on the live and immersive sectors. Taking place over the afternoon of Monday and all day on Tuesday, there’ll be online workshops, discussion panels and screenings looking at how independent venues and screen spectatorship have been affected by current circumstances.

Online Premieres from Manchester Contemporary Youth Opera | Wed 16 Sep | 7.30pm - 8.30pm

Manchester Contemporary Youth Opera (MYCO) have spent the last few months creating two new operas designed for screen, and they’re premiering on Youtube this Wednesday. This completely new format has beckoned in some creative ideas for communicating operatic stories, including puppets and videography – if you’re a fan of unique, contemporary performances make sure to catch these new shows!

Gluten Free AF | GRUB | Thu 17 Sep | 4pm - 10pm

GRUB’s monthly Gluten Free event is back, hosted in their outdoor garden area at the Red Bank Project. There’ll be gluten free street food from vendors including Tikka Chance On Me and The Cookie Mumster, and Thursdays at GRUB means cocktails are two for a tenner! GRUB recommends groups of 4 or more book online to avoid waiting outside the venue, but smaller groups can show up on the day as there’ll be space saved in their garden.

Virtual Yoga for Beginners | Thu 17 Sep | 6pm - 7pm

This online yoga class is suitable for all levels, and perfect for beginners. Instructor Asha completed her training in Texas and India, and has taught yoga in the USA, India, Canada and Dubai, so you’ll be in incredibly experienced hands if you’re totally new to it. The class lasts 60 minutes, but as you can take part from home there’s no pressure – it’s the perfect way to try something new and make time for a little personal wellness in these difficult times. There are classes on both Thursday and Friday evening from 6pm.

My Neighbor Totoro screening | YES | Sat 19 Sep | 1pm - 3pm

Above The Line film club have the perfect comfort fix for Studio Ghibli fans this week. Acclaimed animation My Neighbor Totoro will screen on Saturday afternoon in The Pink Room at YES. If you’ve never seen this fantasy family story before, you’re sure to love it – and if you have seen it before we bet you can’t resist seeing it again.
