The first week of the Edinburgh Fringe leads to no dearth of comedy highlights as Jamie Hutchinson, Colin Hoult and Justin Moorhouse all make appearances across the city.
There are a lot of exciting debuts at the Fringe this year also, but not everyone can afford to take a month of work to spend a year’s salary trying to get noticed by reviewers. So why not support your local up-and-comers at one of the best open mic spots in the country where talent new and old alike take to the stage to make you laugh for free.
One act that proves you don’t need Edinburgh to help you sell out a tour is Jamie Hutchinson. One of the city’s favourite comedians, he’s done it all off his own steam by being brilliantly funny and mining his own depressing life for absolute comedy gold. He’s now sold out the Frog & Bucket four times over for his debut UK tour and he’ll be at Chorlton Comedy Club this weekend for a headline set. Hutchinson controls the mic and grabs the audience like a Def Comedy Jam performer if it was started in Irlam rather than Harlem. A comedy powerhouse you need to take note of.

The Edinburgh Fringe begins this week but there’s more of an air of resignation than usual this time around. It’s too expensive to perform, it’s too expensive to stay there and it’s too expensive to travel, so many comedians have decided to give it a miss this year in the hopes that this sends some kind of message to the landlords of Edinburgh that they won’t be mugged off every year. XS Malarkey has always continued through the Fringe and always attracted top talent like Colin Hoult but rarely both at the same time. Hoult is a wonder and a Fringe staple. See him in Manchester. Send a message to Edinburgh.
