The ancient game of chess is having a bit of a moment right now, with the traditional board game becoming the unlikely focal point of many an evening out in Manchester.
From hip-hop-soundtracked competitions to rooftop clubs, here are some of the coolest chess clubs to check out in and around the city.
Checkmate MCR, hosted by NTS Radio’s DJ Gardener alongside local artist Gina, is one of the city’s coolest chess clubs, which takes place on the Roof Terrace at YES as well as at the very swanky Soho House Manchester.
Whether you’re a grandmaster or just learning your first moves, the regular sessions are open to everyone. It’s a super casual environment, perfect for meeting new people. While they have some boards available, they tend to run out, so be sure to bring your own if you have one!

The Castlefield Chess Club, which takes place on Sundays from 11am – 3pm brings chess lovers of the city together for casual outdoor games, featuring music and a welcoming, pet-friendly atmosphere in the Castlefield Bowl.
It welcomes all levels, from beginners to experienced players, for relaxed, social chess.

The Dub Techno Chess Club, which takes place in several buzzing Manchester venues including SOUP and The Carlton Club, has open doors to all chess abilities.
The club invites chess players to listen to the aerial sounds of dub techno and encourages the ethos of: ‘allow your mind to be shifted, your focus enhanced’.
Some boards are provided on the night, but bring your own to avoid waiting for too long.

NQ Chess takes place every Tuesday at Northern Pour and The Wayfarer, offering people of the city a space to enjoy a casual or competitive sense of community, promising good games shared over great pints.

A newcomer on the chess club scene, The Hip Hop Chess Club, debuts at Salford’s Y2 Cafe this week (Thu 7 May).
Hosted by rapper Finnerz alongside journalist Rhiannon, the event is all about blending chess, music, and good company into one laid-back evening.
From 8pm until late, guests can drop in, grab a board, and settle into games soundtracked by old school Hip Hop and RnB.
Entry is free, and so are the refreshments on arrival, thanks to collaborations with MOTH Cocktails, Vinca Wines, and Smiling Wolf, for anyone who prefers an alcohol-free option.
