February marks the return of LGBT+ History Month, the annual celebration dedicated to highlighting the history of gay rights and related civil rights movement within the LGBT+ community. Throughout the month, Manchester is hosting a wide variety of events dedicated to the celebration – from films to curated archives. Make sure you immerse yourself in the history and get involved with the local community. Here’s some to look out for…
The classic Bette Davis film All About Eve is being screened at Cultureplex’s Mini Cini by Make A Scene Film Club who have made a name for themselves among the local community as a big queer film party. The film is being shown ahead of the 92nd Academy Award ceremony, so grab a cocktail, sit back and enjoy!
The LGBT Foundation Archive team has curated a special collection of memories and documents exploring the history of LGBTQ communities, held by volunteers who manage the foundation.
An immersive and intimate experience named Unlocking Our Sound Heritage takes place at Manchester Central Library on Wednesday 19 February. Using curated archive audio and projections, this free drop-in event presents a piece of history during which Manchester’s LGBTQ community took to the streets and dance floors in response to the AIDS crisis.
Head down to The Bar on Canal Street with a team (up to 6) or on your own to take part in their annual quiz. With free snacks and everyone’s favourite host Barry, be prepared for an evening of off the wall questions and banter.
