Sweet tooth? If so, you’ll be glad to know that Manchester has a wealth of independent ice cream parlours, cafés and pop-ups with enough icy treats to scratch any sugary itch you may have. Below, you’ll find a handful of Manchester ice cream spots worth seeking out – some of which offer home delivery and are available to try during lockdown. We’ll be updating this list over the coming weeks, so be sure to check back for more ice cream inspiration…

Dish up decadence at Grandpa Greene's Luxury Ice Cream Parlour & Café Bar

Grandpa Greene’s story dates all the way back to the 1920s where the titular ice cream tinker made his own dishes using a churn in the back yard of his Salford corner shop. Over a century later, you’ll find the venue’s staff continuing Greene’s legacy, taking his original recipe and pushing it forward into new and unexpected places. Based in Saddleworth, Grandpa Greene’s specialises in handmade luxury ice cream made with whole milk and thick double cream, and blended with locally sourced ingredients and fruit to create perfection in every scoop. With flavours like heavenly honeycomb, whiskey and ginger and raspberry pavlova on offer – alongside an array of vegan options – you’ll be truly spoiled for choice. Plus, it’s available to sample via lockdown by visiting its parlour directly or buying tubs online.

Sample wonderfully crafted scoops at Ginger's Comfort Emporium

Ginger’s Comfort Emporium is a Manchester institution. Any time we spy their iconic lime-green and pink ice cream truck, we know we’re in for a treat. A mainstay at the city’s many street food and drink markets, and a regular sight at Levy Market just outside of town, city-dwellers can enjoy a scoop of their delicious hand-crafted ice cream by visiting their café bar on the first floor of Affleck’s Palace. There’s plenty of off-beat flavours to get stuck into – like Fior di Latte (sweet creamy milk), the vegan malted coconut milk and specials Campfire (cinnamon, orange, s’mores) and Black Rice Pudding – but if you’re asking us, Chorlton Crack (salted caramel & peanut butter) is all you need. What’s more, their team have recently launched a home-delivery service to help keep you on a sugary high until lockdown lifts.

Share a cone with your four legged friend at Northern Eudaimonia

A relative newcomer to Manchester’s independent ice cream scene, the tricky-to-pronounce Northern Eudaimonia set up shop on Ancoats’ bustling marina a few years back and quickly became a welcome addition to this thriving part of town. Their canal-side parlour sells speciality coffees, loose leaf teas, cakes, milkshakes, wines and beers – but it’s ice cream that we’re interested in here, and in that regard they certainly don’t disappoint. Dairy and vegan flavours are both on offer, including pear and ginger, chocolate and orange blossom, hazelnut rose, Sicilian lemon and many more. They’ve even got dog friendly ice cream, allowing you to share the love with your puppo pals. What’s not to like?

Go wild with colourful treats from Lazy Sundae

One of the newer venues on our list – the Northern Quarter-based Lazy Sundae specialises in serving up obscure ice cream flavours alongside a range of bubble teas and fluffy soufflé pancakes. Served in bao buns or cones adorned with a irresistibly sticky mixture of marshmallow and cereal bits – these indulgent treats were made to be featured on your Instagram. When it comes to scoops, expect wild flavours like matcha, milk tea and peach tea sorbet – and their ice-cold bubble teas sweeten the deal whilst quenching your thirst.
