With warmer weather fast approaching and lockdown restrictions easing, there is no better time to grab a delicious takeaway slice from one of Manchester’s many outstanding pizza kitchens. With this in mind, we’ve compiled some of the city’s best pizzerias, and with a vast array of options ranging from classic NYC style and Detroit deep pan, to more experimental pies, so you are guaranteed to find a slice of heaven in Manchester this summer.
Set in a former MOT garage near Ancoats, Ramona serves Detroit-style pies, defined by their square shape and deep pan. This unique shape has its roots in industry, where motor oil pans were used to cook pizza, creating a thick and flavoursome focaccia-like base. Our top picks are the marinara, topped with San Marzano tomato, garlic, olive oil and basil, and the ‘triple pepps’ with Detroit sauce, plenty of cheese and Ramona’s very own Hot Honey – a sweet and spicy addition that will amp up any dish. You can order a takeaway slice, but Ramona is looking to the future with plans to open a large socially distanced beer and pizza garden from Wednesday 14 April.

With two kitchens in Manchester City Centre, Crazy Pedro’s is one of the city’s well-established pizzerias, serving up inventive pizza and tequila. Living up to the name, their ‘crazy’ flavours are inspired both by classic combinations from different cuisines – and a good dose of experimentation by the Crazy Pedro’s team. The Nacho Libre boasts all the classic nacho toppings – including the nachos themselves. Also delicious is the ‘Can’t Cook Won’t Cluck!’ topped with ‘not’ chicken nuggets, potato waffles, beans and red or brown sauce. Crazy Pedro’s are available for takeaway and delivery, with plans to open their outdoor space in the NQ for bottomless pizza and margaritas from Wednesday 14 April with booking and walk-in slots available.

Nell’s Pizza began as a pop-up shop at the start of 2020 and now serves out of two kitchens. It’s easy to see how these huge British/NYC fusion slices of pizza made with thinly rolled, 36-hour fermented dough have gained popularity so quickly. Worth trying is the Vegan Deluxe, topped with artichokes, marinated peppers, red onion, garlic, and Nell’s ‘vegan’duja’. The Original Cheese is also a firm favourite, oozing with stringy mozzarella and juicy tomato. You can find them at Common in the Northern Quarter and in Chorlton, with takeaway available on individual slices or whole pizzas. This includes their new ‘Nell’s at Home’ kits, enabling you to flex your culinary skills making an NYC style pie at home.
