With a slate of shows spanning the full breadth of musical expressiveness and artistic vision, the Lowry’s upcoming calendar of events promises an array of world-class performances with something for everyone, including ballet, opera, children’s classics and even a Bob Dylan musical.
As we head into the autumn theatre season, here are some of the Lowry’s unmissable shows.
Hailed by The Observer as ‘the number one theatre show of the year’, the celebrated playwright Conor McPherson’s ode to Great Depression Americana ingeniously reimagines the timeless songs of Bob Dylan ‘like you’ve never heard them before’, as a group of disparate and wayward characters face their daunting futures in 1934 Minnesota.
Boasting a star-studded cast including Coronation Street‘s James Gaddas and Mamma Mia!‘s Parisa Shahmir, Fisherman’s Friends recounts the meteoric, scarcely believable rise of the Cornish ‘buoy band’ in a feel-good, foot-stomping voyage from Port Isaac to the Pyramid Stage.
Drawing upon the diverse yet harmonious disciplines of ballet, Chinese folk, kathak and contemporary dance, Samsara promises a compelling journey of strength, fear, love and self-development. Inspired by the monastic pilgrimage between China and India – as recounted in the 16th century classic Chinese story, Journey to the West – acclaimed dancers Hu Shenyuan and Aakash Odedra bring their jaw-dropping choreography to the Lowry for one night only.
Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this ‘landmark musical’ follows Celie’s odyssey through anguish, joy, despair and hope as she emerges from a traumatic, abusive youth and discovers kinship, strength and self-love. Set to a ‘profoundly evocative score’ full of ragtime, blues and gospel, The Color Purple is a fearless, inspirational classic.
Featuring everything from the invigorating Verdi classic La Traviata to a sweeping, nature-inspired paean to the Moravian countryside in Leos Jacanek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Leeds-based Opera North deliver a slate of six incredible shows across two seasons beginning this November.
Celebrating 10 years since its premiere at Sadlers Wells, when it became the fastest-selling production in New Adventures’ history, Matthew Bourne’s award-winning Sleeping Beauty returns to Salford in a joyous flurry of enchanting set design, exquisite dancing and a delightful Tchaikovsky score.
