Several exciting creative projects have been brought together by young people’s mental health charity 42nd Street and creative venue The Horsfall for the The Future is Ours online festival, running this month until Thursday 26 November. Much of the work features the theme of voicelessness, which is something the festival is trying to help artists with – giving them a platform for their voices to be heard. All events are free to enjoy via The Horsfall and 42nd Street’s social media accounts – and we’ve picked out some of our favourites from this year’s line up. Explore the full line-up here.

Creative Youth present… Me, The City, (My) Future | Sat 21 & Sun 22 Nov | 1pm

This free showcase offers an insight into the thoughts and feelings of so many young people in Manchester. It divulges into the minds of many who are still searching for their place in the city and for an identity. Made up of speeches, statements and songs, this powerful performance is running across two days, so there’s plenty of time to give it a watch.

Message for the Future : Art Makes You Feel Better | Tue 24 Nov | 6pm

This is another moving piece – a film by local filmmakers Sophia Hart, Jamie-Lee Wainman and Anna Horton. The art action film focuses on ideas of bullying – again bringing us back to the theme of voicelessness – yet progresses the discussion into the idea of gaining strength and finding your voice. It is clear that creativity can give you a ‘voice’, and this piece highlights exactly that, proving that art really does make you feel better.

The Future Is Ours Symposium | Wed 25 Nov | 10am-1.30pm

Exploring the role that art plays in mental wellbeing, specifically throughout 2020, this symposium brings together artists, academics and mental health practitioners to discuss the messages that many of the artists taking part in this festival want to share. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a severe downfall to the art industry, and this symposium will allow creatives to explain why they stuck with their passion, and just how much art means to them. All festival content will be uploaded to 42nd Street and The Horsfall’s social media and the festival website each day, and is definitely worth checking out.
