With a brand new decade fast approaching, there’s never been a better time to broaden your knowledge, learn a new skill or just get out there and experience something new. Thankfully, Manchester’s newest cultural and creative hub Cultureplex has an array of events scheduled throughout January to help you on your way.

Tarot Readings for the New Decade | Sun 5 Jan | 2pm - 8pm | £20

Want to know what the New Year holds? Sounds like you should get down to Tarot Readings for the New Decade. This forward-thinking event invites you to sit down with Los Angeles-based artist, musician and occultist Tamaryn to find out what’s on the cards for you in 2020. Having spent the majority of her life studying The Tarot and ceremonial magick, her readings will focus on astrology, divination and esoteric correspondences.

Bums on Seats: Demystifying Cultural Marketing | Thu 16 Jan | 7.30pm - 9pm | Free

Brush up on your Digital Marketing prowess with The Lowry’s Head of Marketing, Patrick Ratliff. He’ll be on hand at Cultureplex on Thursday 16 January to share his expert insights and industry tips on how you can successfully spread the word about your upcoming events and get those all important bums-on-seats. Got a show you want people to see in 2020? This one’s for you.

How To: Choose Great Wine in The Supermarket | Mon 20 Jan | 6.30pm - 7.30pm | £20

We’ve all been there: stood in the wine isle, chin stroking and wondering what the difference is between a full bodied Sauvignon and a light and fruity Grenache. Thankfully, Hawksmore’s in-house wine manager Chloe Hicks is here to help solve all of our tipple trouble with her one-hour introduction to good wine. During this session, Chloe will discuss what to look for, what to avoid and how to find a bargain in your local supermarket. She’ll even throw in some drinks to help illustrate her points – you know, for research purposes.

Pop Cultures: RuPaul | Tue 21 Jan | 6pm - 7.30pm | £5

Continuing her monthly series dissecting the ways in which pop culture permeates and impacts our everyday lives, Salford University’s Dr Kirsty Fairclough turns her attention to Drag Race mastermind RuPaul for her debut 2020 session. Over the course of 80 minutes, Fairclough will examine this icon’s rise to fame, his complex relationship with the transgender community and how he brought drag into the mainstream. Come armed with questions and an appetite for discussion.

HEARD Storytelling | Sun 26 Jan | 4pm - 6pm | £5

Existing somewhere between stand up comedy, storytelling and a group confessional chat – HEARD Storytelling invites attendees to connect through real-life stories and experiences. Each month centres on a brand new theme, with January’s looking at wild moments in response to the often-tame nature of the post-party season. Everyone is welcome – and participation is completely voluntary.
