Manchester Craft and Design Centre is a hidden gem in the heart of the city. Tucked away down a side street in the Northern Quarter, you could easily miss it but then you would be missing out on so much. The Centre is home to some of the region’s most talented artists, designers and makers. There’s a total of 19 studios spread over the two floors of this quirky Victorian building. In each one, you can meet the creatives themselves and even watch them at work. With Christmas approaching, there’s no better place to peruse for a unique gift. There are countless present ideas to choose from, and below are just five…

Bookmarks by Jane Blease

Head upstairs to Studio 25 and you will find a collection of wood veneer lampshades, framed artwork, jewellery and accessories – all with intricate embroidered patterns. Jane’s bookmarks are handmade from various woods, with several designs available. These are always hugely popular as gifts, as they make great stocking fillers. Prices start at £14.

Hanging Planters from Katherine Lees

Sharing an office with Jane (above) is this ceramics expert who specialises in screen printed porcelain. Katherine sells jewellery and many kinds of containers and vessels which are all handmade onsite. Her hanging planters are a standout, as they come in a range of designs, including some with images of the natural world. Prices start at £40.

Earrings from Stacey Hill

Studio 22 – collectively known as Divinity – is a haven for contemporary jewellery, housing three talented designers. Stacey makes accessories inspired by minerals and her musical tastes. She has quirky necklaces, rings and bangles on sale – but it’s her handmade rubber dipped earrings that we think would make the perfect addition to a festive night out. Prices start at £25.

Fabric Silo Storage from &made

This company specialises in gifts and home wares which are all made using traditional skills with a modern twist. You’ll find a wide range of products made from wood, textiles and paper. Amongst the standouts are these storage solutions which are perfect for the kitchen, study or playroom. They come in various fabric styles and prices start from £10.

Christmas Cards and Gift Wrap from Ink Inc.

You may have seen Ink’s quirky items in boutique stores around Manchester, so why not get them straight from the source? These hand illustrated products often feature cute animal designs that will warm the heart of even the biggest Scrooge. Many can be personalised with your own message. Carrds start from £2.50 while gift wrap is just £1.50 per sheet or two for £2.
