The world-premiere of the bold and triumphantly inspiring new play 42 Balloons has now landed at The Lowry for its month-long blockbuster run packed with gleefully bizarre adventures and infectious 80s-infused pop.

The heartwarming show about dreams, hope and never giving up opened last week to standing ovations, incredible feedback and sold-out performances.

The brand new production from the team behind smash-hit musical phenomenon SIX, 42 Balloons transports audiences back to the high summer of 1982 to reimagine the marvellously improbable true story of modest, straightforward truck driver Larry Walters. One gorgeous, clear day in Southern California, Larry made an inconceivable bid to fulfil his life-long, sky-high dream. Defying the odds, FAA airspace regulations and gravity itself, he strapped himself to his lawn chair and soared sixteen thousand feet above the palm-fringed streets of Long Beach, borne by forty-two helium-filled weather balloons.

Led by a sparkling cast including Evelyn Hoskins (Waitress, Gypsy, Spring Awakening) and Charlie McCullagh (Bonnie & Clyde, Jesus Christ Superstar), the story of Lawnchair Larry unfolds against spellbindingly immersive set design and an irresistible 80s-inspired pop score from Jack Godfrey (This is a Love Story, Babies).

Promising the perfect theatrical experience for visitors of all tastes, 42 Balloons tops the bill of The Lowry’s unmissable spring/summer season with an achingly charming true story of hope, bravery and the timeless power of determination.
