Though the likes of monthly hip hop night Golden Egg are dedicated to bringing together local talent and provide a platform for heads to collaborate and listen, it’s nice to also see a major venue like the Academy dedicating a night to Manchester artists. Cypher is a new event, the people behind it having worked with local heroes Bloc2Bloc, as well as Madam X and jungle collectives Chopstick Dubplate and Born On Road. They’re bringing Black The Ripper up from the capital and surrounding him with Mancs:  the city’s new sound has a heavy respect for jazz, soul and classic hip hop but morphs it into a vibe unique to the Northern capital – Free Wize Men are a prime example of this melting pot approach, with Blind Mic, Afro Sam and Kiva all bringing their individual skills to the fray. Joining them are Kinkai (pictured), who offered one of the albums of 2017 with Mellow Mermaids and Malibu, regular collaborator glue70 together with hotly tipped producer Kill Miami and hosts Sparkz and Truthos Mufasa (LEVELZ, The Mouse Outfit). Fresh talent comes from A Broken Camarilla and Chris Amor XXVI, plus a DJ set from Loco Swim.
