Later this month, HOME is set to continue its innovative series Music & Film, which sees musicians perform live scores to movies. There will be two screenings of Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1927), with music by Josephine Oniyama and her band. An early example of Scandinavian noir, Häxan is a macabre classic which is still visually stunning even after so many decades. The film begins as a documentary, looking at the hysteria surrounding witch trials in the middle ages. It soon becomes an out-and-out horror movie, with scenes of grave robbing, demonic possession, and satanic rituals which were considered highly shocking upon release. The main music performer, Josephine Oniyama, is a Manchester-born singer and guitarist who is known for mixing gospel and soul. Joining her will be a group of musicians from Salford University, who will be adding to the atmosphere with synthesisers, drum machines and samplers.
