A new exhibition documenting the unique endeavours of live artist Sonia Hughes comes to Longsight this October.

Sonia has spent the last three years taking to public spaces around the world to build her ‘house’, designed by architect Lee Ivett.

In each location, Sonia arrives, marks out her space 6m by 6m with two gaps for her and others to enter and exit and over the course of 7 hours, she builds, has conversations with passers-by about home, love, belonging, freedom, drinks tea and then dismantles the house.

Her son, a photographer, Solomon Hughes has documented this process. On display in the exhibition, titled I Am From Reykjavik, will be 3 boxes of hundreds of photos from a particular build which acts like a flick book film of the day.

On one wall will be a collage of photos, showing the repetition and weird accidents of the multiple builds. Then a series of photos which beautifully capture the key moments over the last three years.

As visitors arrive an arresting one-take film made by Juliet Ellis, along with newspapers, live writing texts, and questions for the audience.

I Am From Reykjavik will be displayed at Longsight Community Art Space from Fri 11 Oct – Fri 25 Oct. You can read more about the project here.

Fri 11 Oct - Fri 25 Oct, 89 Northmoor Rd, Longsight, Manchester M12 4PF, Longsight Community Art Space
