Castlefield Gallery presents a solo show by Jerwood Drawing Prize shortlistee and the Marmite Painting Prize winner, Iain Andrews. With a contemporary and abstract outlook, a nod to the old masters and an occasional injection of humour, local resident Andrews draws on folklore and tales of transfiguration and metamorphosis to reflect a 20th century shift in our attitude towards history. Re-view brings a selection of Iain Andrew’s more familiar paintings and drawings which often begin and then deviate from an image in art history, as well as some of his more recent sculptural works including Il Teatro dei Leviatano (2013) a miniature theatre constructed with intricately illustrated props and backdrops. Andrews has also created a new site-specific piece for the gallery in the form of a large scale mural forming a dramatic backdrop giving the viewer the chance to engage in an ongoing dialogue with the work.
