The first month of the new year is always a bit of a slog, but luckily we’ve managed to find some top comedy nights to keep you mirthful throughout the darkness of January.

Shhark Comedy | Every Mon from 8 Jan | Hold Fast | 8pm | £2
Starting late last year and fast becoming a favourite amongst comics and punters alike this new act and new material night is a mad scramble of ideas and alcohol. A concoction always certain to bring big laughs.

XS Malarkey | Every Tuesday from 9 Jan | The Bread Shed | 7.30pm | £5/3
As a notoriously fallow period for comedy or even good feelings at all XS Malarkey are putting in some heavy lifting to raise the spirits of Mancunians with a stellar line up throughout January ft. We Are Klang’s Steve Hall, Rose Matafeo, Joe Lycett and Jess Fostekew.

The Delightful Sausage | Fri 12 Jan | The Eagle Inn | 8pm | FREE
After a very successful 2017, meat themed sketch comedy duo The Delightful Sausage make a start on their ‘difficult second album’ with some help from James Meehan and Ad ‘Dougie’ Douglas at Salford’s The Eagle Inn.

The Magnificent Seven | Sat 13 Jan | Gorilla | 7.30pm | £7
Group Therapy kick off the new year with their picks of the best in new comedy as seven of their favourite fresh stand ups take the stage with Jess Fostekew overseeing proceedings. Check out our full preview here.

Justin Moorehouse and Alun Cochrane | Wed 17 Jan | The Lowry | 8pm | £5
Another new material from a couple of more established acts on the Manchester scene. Justin Moorehouse (Phoenix Nights) and Alun Cochrane will be testing out some new work a few times throughout the year and inviting a mystery guest along to try with them.

Brennan Reece | Sat 20 Jan | The Lowry | 8pm | £12/10
Recently announced as the voice of ITV’s new Love Island spin off ‘Survival of the Fittest’ Brennan Reece is back with the follow up to his Best Newcomer nominated Edinburgh show. A buoyant delight always worth catching, certainly before he undoubtedly explodes in popularity.

The Establishment | Wed 24 Jan | The Kings Arms | 7.30pm | £8
Dan Lees and Neil Frost bring their stiff upper lipped pair for a night of holding on to a past that never was. Expect a bizarre night of ‘silliness as an artform’ as the two ultra-privileged British gents struggling to hold onto their whimsical world of cricket, tea and secret arms deals.

The Comedians Football Podcast | Mon 29 Jan | Gullivers | 7.30pm | £4
Chris Copestake brings his popular podcast to life at Gullivers alongside XS Manchester Comedians of the Year Jamie Hutchinson for a chat about the beautiful game and much more. All proceeds from the night go to mental health charity Mind.

Rik Carranza | Tue 30 Jan | The Castle Hotel | 7pm | £9
It’s the battle of the ‘Stars’ as Scottish-Filipino comic Rik Carranza pits ‘Trek vs Wars’ in a bold move for any fan of geek culture. A battle of science fiction and science fantasy that’s sure to end in some tears and a lot of laughs.
