Jodrell Bank has announced details of a brand-new exhibition that celebrates 80 years of groundbreaking, intergalactic discoveries.
Launching on Sat 24 Jan, Cosmic Threads explores the connection between embroidery and astronomy. Working with textile artist Anne Kelly, this project encouraged participants to craft a 23cm x 23cm textile panel that shared their personal connections to the wonders of the cosmos, with the finished creations joining the venue’s permanent collection.
Following more than 200 submissions from people of all walks of life — locally, nationally and internationally — the finished work will go on display in a dedicated public exhibition within Jodrell’s Space Pavilion, before taking up permanent residence at the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The contributions take a variety of inspirations, ranging from personal experiences and visits to the Lovell Telescope to different interpretations of the revolutionary research carried out at Jodrell Bank.
Speaking about the work, Anne Kelly said: “What struck me most, once the panels were assembled, was how well each contribution supported the others and how clearly each could be seen. I would like to thank the Jodrell Bank team and all of the contributors for making this unique project happen.
“I am delighted and honoured to have been commissioned to create this memorable piece and to work with the Jodrell Bank community.”
Cosmic Threads will run from Fri 24 Jan – Fri 27 Mar. Book your visit below.
