What the Ladybird Heard at The Lowry is a touring farmyard song and dance show based on the book by Julia Donaldson. Ideal for very small children (3-5 years old, I’d say) there’s a tiny bit of peril in the plot, in the shape of a couple of robbers who (SPOILER ALERT) attempt to steal a prize cow. It’s a shame they don’t steal her actually, as the cow has a lot of attitude – as do two Liverpudlian cats and the banter between the animals and cast is a highlight. Lead actress is Emma Carroll, a farm hand, with a talent for playing the flute and singing. Coming at you like a proper big sister, she makes everyone want to join in, no matter how old they are. The cast includes a jolly farmer and two farm hands / robbers called Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len. Len – played by Matt Jopling – comes out with natural-looking (yet really tricky to pull off) physical theatre numbers, as well as being the guy who gets everything wrong. My children (5) think he’s hilarious. Packed with song and dance numbers, this is a warm-hearted show, that’s just the right length (55mins). Inventive puppetry such as a sheep made from a wheelbarrow add to the appeal, and the result is an ideal first theatre experience with plenty to offer Mums, Dads and carers too.
