Sitting still in a room full of strangers listening closely to strange sounds might not sound like your average night out, but Kinokophonography isn’t your average event. Sound artists and enthusiasts from Manchester and all over the world are invited to contribute field recordings (up to five minutes each) to be played at Kinokophonography’s listening events, resulting in a collage of the weird and the wonderful, the familiar and the unexpected. The title Kinokophone is drawn from the words ‘kino’ (cinema) and ‘phone’ (sound), and many of the recordings tell stories evocative of whole new worlds. Some of the sound artists are also on hand to talk about their work, why they decided to make their recordings and explain how they achieved their unusual aural effects. On Thursday 23 August, Kinokophonography takes over MadLab with recordings on the theme ‘origin’. Expect to surprised by what sound artists can come up with, and disbelieve your ears.
