Kendal is calling even louder than usual this October with the return of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in 2018. The festival, held at the same time each year, sees over 70 of the best comic artists, writers and creators from across the globe for a creative weekend of talks, exhibitions, events and films. The only event of its kind in the UK, this year’s highlights include visits from cartoonists Graham Dury and Simon Thorp, better known as creators of national treasure Viz, Guardian cartoonist Steven Appleby, 2000 AD writer Robbie Morrison and a special signing event from Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard and Tokyo-based comic book artist Mikiko (pictured). Attendees can also look forward to a lively ‘which is best?’ debate looking at comic titans Marvel v DC, along with talks from Doctor Who and Vampire Academy artist Emma Vieceli and Indian graphic artist and designer Orijit Sen, to name just a couple. There’s an abundance of events to take part in over the three days, with family-friendly comic art trails through Kendal, live draws from industry names and international comic book launches, with live music, comedy and cabaret throughout the weekend. Adult passes for the weekend are £35, with day passes starting at £19. Separate tickets are also available for film screenings of Steamboy and The Simpsons Movie, introduced by animator David Silverman.
