Castlefield Gallery gets behind emerging talent in November with the showcasing of new work by three recent Manchester School of Art graduates. Selected by the gallery’s Director Kwong Lee and Manchester School of Art’s Head of Art and Associate Dean Penny Macbeth, the exhibition contrasts the individual works of Calum Crawford, Sophie Mitchell and Darren Murphy. Calum explores both the romantic and dark sides of popular culture using footage and imagery with constructed 3D components, Sophie combines images with sculptural elements to look into authenticity and ideals in photography (pictured), while Darren takes a more contextual approach, replacing visual content and instead employing ‘Artist Assistants’ to represent both himself and his work, documenting the resulting interactions. Displayed together, the works demonstrate the distinct creative range of this year’s graduates and emerging talents.
