Manchester’s First Street will be taken over by a group of life-sized polar bears, as the area transforms into an immersive winter wonderland for the festive season.

The new installation is titled ‘Celebration’, a reference to the term used to describe ‘a group of polar bears, brought together as a community by good food’.

Created by local Denton-based artist Lazerian, AKA Liam Hopkins, he was asked to create 5m long sculptures that will illuminate Tony Wilson Place from Mon 29 November, right throughout the Christmas period.

Inspiration for the piece comes from the animal’s characteristics. Polar bears will only tolerate others nearby if there is a good source of food.

They will also represent First Street’s efforts to become a net-zero commercial space.
