Electronic music meets the digital arts in a ‘new each time’ live performance called SpaceTime Helix by Michela Pelusio at the Lowry this January. This mesmerising and magical production is a direct response to different sounds each time it is performed, meaning that it’s new at every outing – and those attending the show are guaranteed a complete, one-off experience. The work’s creator, Italian multidisciplinary artist and curator Michela Pelusio, has an impressive international performance record, including Festival BAM, Mutek and various TEDx events, and she has created and exhibited installations and performances across Europe, Asia and America. Exploring the realms of human perception, art and science, Pelusio creates immersive audiovisual experiences using space, light, matter and sound. From the same strand of programming that brought us the feast of light, sound, colour and technology that was UK artists Marshmallow Laser Feast’s IRIS in 2017, The Lowry will present SpaceTime Helix in its Quays Theatre – big enough to allow the impressive 10-metre high spinning visual wave to develop. But how? Well, Pelusio has a specially designed opto-acoustic instrument that produces the bright and transparent helix, and she works with guest sound artists in order to create each unique show. According to the creator, the helix’s ‘waves seem to travel through time and disappear into the future’ – and who are we to argue?
