As part of Manchester Literature Festival, DJ/Writer Dave Haslam’s second book, titled We the Youth: Keith Haring’s New York Nightlife is launching at The Whitworth Gallery with a special event. The book explores life after clubbing and how important queer activism was to the life of American pop-art and graffiti artist Keith Haring, who died in 1990. At this book reading and talk hosted by Greg Thorpe, anecdotes are interspersed with extracts from the music of the era. Dave will talk the audience through his experience of stable New York night-time venues including Club 57, the Mudd Club, Danceteria, and Paradise Garage, painting a portrait of the scene experienced by Keith Haring and his contemporaries, including the legendary Jean-Michel Basquiat. The exclusive book launch runs from 7pm-8.15 with doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets are free but booking ahead is advised. In addition, Manchester Literature festival is putting on various events throughout October. The Fest will feature over 100 established and emerging writers appearing at venues city wide. Over the course of 17 days, there will be readings, discussions, walking tours, and even theatrical performances. Tickets are now on sale and be sure to act fast, because several shows are close to selling out. The full line-up can be found on the official website.
