The Lowry Hotel’s River Restaurant has played host to huge names over the years. Regular customers include Wayne Rooney and Kylie, while Marco Pierre White is among the AA five star hotel’s former head chefs. Of course, it’s no secret that Jose Mourinho has been living at the hotel since he took over the Manchester United manager position in 2016 and, with a river-facing cocktail bar and one of the finest wine lists in the land, who can blame him? Yet eating at the Lowry is more affordable than you’d think. Particularly with a ongoing offer of three-courses for £15.95 from the Spring menu until the end of February 2018 (not Sat dinner, Sun lunch or Valentine’s). Options include soup of the day, beetroot buckwheat risotto with smoked feta or opt for a generous slab of clementine-glazed chicken liver parfait with toasted sourdough. Beef onglet steak (from Chorlton’s Frosts butchers) is a zingy, chimichurri thrill, while other options include spaghetti nero with vongale clam sauce and grilled chicken with parsnip mash and cherry jus. My veggie friend enjoys salt-baked swede, heritage carrots and baby neeps with coriander salsa  – and dessert are universally five star. Sticky Medjool date and toffee pudding is perfect, while the banana, chocolate and peanut butter parfait (pictured) is an inspired homage to our favourite Reese’s bar. The Lowry feels like a special place to eat at any time of year, and, until the end of February, it’s a bargain too.
