The big switch-on of Manchester’s Christmas lights is this Saturday, and to mark the occasion there’s the usual free evening of entertainment at Albert Square. A family-friendly event, there will be performances by the casts of the Opera House’s production of Cinderella and The Lowry’s Sound of Music. Also appearing is Brit Award-winning singer Lemar (who’s not to be confused with Limahl), and Lucy O’Byrne, finalist of The Voice. Headlining act, Scouting For Girls, will playing some of their pop rock hits, including She’s So Lovely and This Ain’t a Love Song. Pressing the big red button will be Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh and Catherine Tyldesley. The evening will culminate with a 10-minute long fireworks display. This is the first time the switch-on is taking place on a Saturday, so it’s predicted to have even more visitors than usual. Big Santa’s back, baby.
