Manchester Camerata hosts a celebration of Mozart’s lighter Horn Concertos across two shows at the Stoller Hall this spring.
In its Mozart, Made in Manchester series, Manchester Camerata leads playful concertos that capture the close, jokey and unlikely friendship between Mozart and Joseph Leutgeb, one of the finest horn players of his time.
The first concert, which takes place on Wed 2 Apr, will feature a variety of Mozart’s incredible horn works, as well as Marianna Martines, Overture in C Major, and Haydn’s Symphony No.94. Marianna, a composer also based in Vienna around the same time as Mozart, overcame gender-based obstacles to become a prominent member of the Viennese Musical scene.
Joining the Camerata on the night will be lauded and energetic conductor Gábor Takács-Nag, and Martin Owen, who is regarded as one of Europe’s leading horn players and whose performances have been described by The Times as ‘a luxury for the ears’.
Part 2 of the series returns to The Stoller Hall on Fri 23 May. Continuing with the fun-yet-challenging nature of the pieces that came about thanks to the friendship between Mozart and Leutgeb, this show will feature Concerto No.4 during the 3rd movement, which showcases a musical game of ‘catch me if you can’, where the orchestra ‘chases’ the horn player who is always a step ahead.
Joined again by Gábor and Martin, the night will also include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, one of the composer’s more cheery and joyful pieces.
