Manchester City’s glittering trophy haul and rich footballing history are set to become the focus of a new, immersive museum experience later this year.
Located at the heart of the £300m Medlock Square development at the Etihad Campus, the Manchester City Museum Experience will span more than 1,700 square metres across ten distinct spaces designed to bring the club’s story to life through interactive technology, memorabilia and fan culture.
Visitors will be able to step inside nostalgic recreated environments inspired by different eras of City’s past, including Moss Side, home to the club’s beloved Maine Road stadium between 1923 and 2003. Elsewhere, guests can try their hand at football punditry, uncover hidden stories woven throughout the exhibition and pose for photographs alongside all 48 major trophies won by City’s first teams.
Alongside the historical displays, guests can get involved with hands-on activities and football challenges, with the dedicated City x PUMA Arena offering an opportunity to play through a series of interactive games, including a shooting drill inspired by Sergio Aguero’s legendary stoppage time title-winner in 2012.
The attraction will also combine physical artefacts and digital storytelling, while a dedicated pop-up exhibition space will allow the museum to evolve over time with new themes, temporary displays and fresh perspectives from supporters whose memories have shaped the club’s identity across generations.
Designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the internationally renowned studio behind projects including the London Transport Museum, the Obama Presidential Center and the American Museum of Natural History, the experience aims to appeal not only to lifelong City supporters but also to families, football enthusiasts and visitors keen to explore Manchester’s wider cultural landscape.
The new attraction forms part of the wider Medlock Square scheme, which upon completion will operate year round and feature a 401 bed hotel, new food and drink venues, office space, a covered fan zone and a roof walk experience, as well as a new three-floor flagship CityStore developed in partnership with PUMA and stichd.
The museum will complement Manchester City’s existing stadium tour, which currently ranks among the top five visitor attractions in the UK according to TripAdvisor reviews. Further details, including ticket information and opening dates, are expected ahead of the attraction’s launch later this year.
Danny Wilson, Managing Director of Manchester City Operations, said:
“Building a completely new museum has allowed us to create an immersive experience that celebrates the people and moments which have shaped Manchester City.
“But our story isn’t traditional and straightforward, so why should our museum experience be? We want something different. Something immersive which will resonate with our fans, as well as excite the wider city. In doing so, we have developed something that appeals to fans, complements the Etihad Campus and provides a year round attraction for the city.“
