On Sun 8 Feb, Manchester Collective returns to Aviva Studios with Sky with the Four Suns, an immersive concert experience that invites audiences into a realm flooded with light, space and radiant sound at Factory International.
Drawing inspiration from the Alaskan wilderness and the vast, crystalline filament of the Arctic sky, the programme unfolds as a glacial phenomenon, where night and day blur and refract. In John Luther Adams’ stark yet luminous Canticles of the Sky for string quartet, expansive textures evoke the creeping warmth of a frosty landscape coming into focus, as sunbeams strike ice to form dazzling halos and sundogs.
Along the way, the Collective bathes in the meditative clarity of Arvo Pärt’s Summa, before drifting across alien climes shaped by music from Benjamin Britten, Henry Purcell and experimental British composer Mica Levi, best known for his beguiling, uncanny film scores for Under the Skin and The Zone of Interest.
The evening also features a new commission from composer Jasmine Morris – written especially for Manchester Collective – who rethreads time through immersive soundscapes and otherworldly arrangement.
Sky with the Four Suns promises a deeply atmospheric live experience that encourages audiences to look upward, ascend to the highest heights and revel in the sound of wondrous elemental forces.
