Neal Portenza | Solomons Café Bar | Tue 12 Sep | 7.30pm | £5
September is usually a pretty quiet month as the hangover of Edinburgh kicks in for most comedians but Tony Basnett and Trapdoor Comedy have decided a bit of hair of the dog should do every one right and have set up two excellent comedy nights this week across the city. First up is the surreal genius of Doctor Professor Neal Portenza who takes over Solomans in Withington for a night with the daftest, smartest man you’re likely to meet. Support comes from the non-more-deadpan Simon Lomas.

Brendon Burns | The Old Monkey | Wed 13 Sep | 7.30pm | £5
Not to rest on their laurels Basnett and his merry band then take over The Old Monkey on Portland Street with another antipodean comic in Perrier award winning Brendon Burns. An excellent chance to see one of the world’s angriest comics in an intimate surround of a great pub, and also a chance to see the newly nominated as best newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe Chris Washington who will be playing his first gig back in Manchester after his festival success.

Phil Ellis | South West Manchester Cricket Club | Fri 15 Sep | 7.30pm | £7/10
Another comic fresh from the Fringe will be Phil Ellis who spent the month of August doing another Funz and Gamez installment, his own hour long show every day and also presenting BBC Radio 4’s Funny From The Fringe. But none of that will take the wind out of old Pip’s sails and it’s always a pleasure to see just what on earth he will come up with on any given night. Especially one in a cricket club. He’ll be joined by a stellar supporting line up including Edy Hurst, Masai Graham and Lindsey Santoro for a top night of stand up in Chorlton.

Morgan & West | The Lowry | Sun 17 Sep | 8pm | £12/10
If you’re a fan of time travel, magic and comedy then all your dreams are about to come true as ‘time-travelling magicians’ Morgan & West bring their latest show to The Lowry this Sunday. Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe and also the nineteenth century they have a trunk full of Victorian japes and tricks to astound their audience. They’re also doing a family friendly show earlier in the day if you’d like to take the kids along.
