Manchester Midday Music bring their ever-popular classical concert series back to The Bridgewater Hall this September, promising a brand-new-look season of diverse and inspiring shows spanning piano recitals, chamber music and more to offer a wondrous musical reprieve from the lunchtime frenzy.

Opening the series on Wed 3 Sep, Trilogy Ensemble present a vivid and innovative programme exploring Baroque, Medieval, and British folk forms. Featuring Amy-Jayne Milton (flute), Bethan Griffiths (harp), and Henrietta Hill (viola), the group are best known for their warm, expressive sound and thrillingly creative arrangements. Their set includes music by Ravel, Ibert, and Dubois, alongside a reimagining of O Viridissima Virga by Hildegard von Bingen and works by Rebecca Clarke and Miguel del Aguila.

On Mon 15 Sep, Serbian violinist Jelena Horvat joins forces with pianist Svitlana Kosenko for a passionate recital featuring Dvořák, Enescu, Janáček, and Ravel. Both musicians bring stellar international credentials to this one-off concert, which centres around Eastern European folk-inspired works and virtuosic showpieces.

Esteemed Russian baritone Efím Zaválny performs on Mon 6 Oct, joined by pianist Rebekka Magomedova. A former soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre, Zaválny has performed with leading opera houses in his homeland and around the world. His profound sensitivity and interpretive nuance imbues a programme of Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky with dazzling flair and stirring sentiment.

Then, on Thu 23 Oct, acclaimed pianist and 2022 Terence Judd-Halle Award-winner Alexander Gadjiev delivers a compelling solo recital with works by Schubert, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev. A former BBC New Generation Artist and multiple international prize-winner, Gadjiev’s performances are renowned for their ‘improvisatory instincts and formidable analytic powers’ (Gramophone Magazine). His next solo album, Legends, is set for release in August.

Returning to The Bridgewater Hall following a memorable concert last October, fan favourites and online sensations Jonathan (organ) and Tom Scott (piano) bring their distinctive energy and flair to the Midday Concert Series on Mon 3 Nov. Performing in instrumental combinations which cover the entire keyboard spectrum, Scott Brothers Duo presents a programme of bold and captivating arrangements of pieces by Rossini, Bach, Hahn and more, including The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, William Tell Overture and À Chloris.

On Wed 19 Nov, pianist Henry Lewis takes the stage with a solo programme featuring compositions by Bach, Saariaho, Kurtág and Franck. Known for his original, thoughtful approach and collaborative work with the likes of clarinetist Matthew Hunt, Bruno Delepelaire (Berlin Philharmonic), flautist Patrick Gallois, Lewis’ expansive oeuvre includes compositional works inspired by Guillaume Apollinaire and a recent BBC Radio 3 debut performing works by Luciano Berio.
The Manchester Midday Music autumn series concludes in style on Tue 2 Dec, with the genre-defying and ‘technically astonishing’ (The Arts Desk) Connaught Brass (pictured). Seeking to redefine perceptions of brass music while offering a fresh, absorbing musical experience, Connaught blends storied heritage with warm, vibrant youthfulness, breathing new life into tradition with a programme including Rameau, Victor Ewald and a new commission by Dani Howard.
