Manchester’s got a huge amount to recommend it, from skyscrapers and museums to an excellent quality of life. However the people who live here know that its the city’s independent yet friendly approach to life that makes it such a great place to be based. International travel guide, Lonely Planet, appears to have got under the city’s skin as a new guide which has just come out cites Manchester’s weekly Levy Market as a key stop on the tourist trail. Given Lonely Planet’s international popularity, it seems likely that market regulars will be sharing the streets with even more visitors from around the world than usual from now on. It’s not all about shopping either. As well as being a place to meet your mates and pick up everything from vintage throws to street food, the market is home to a number of innovative and ethical initiatives, which include all sorts of things from reusable mugs and permanent recycling bins to Levenshulme’s first ‘green roof’ which has been created to add to the area’s biodiversity.

Every Saturday, behind Levenshulme train station, Stockport Road, Levenshulme, Manchester, M19 3AB, 10am – 4pm, FREE, www.levymarket.com
