Castlefield Gallery will exhibit its latest Launch Pad project entitled Literacy, a short solo exhibition of the work of Preston-based artist, Martin Hamblen. Taking inspiration from Duchamp’s readymade series, Hamblen’s work interrogates the everyday whilst playing with the idea of journeys, maps, and borders. The semiotics of our travels, told through stories and collected through souvenirs are represented through a mixture of artwork and performance. Works will include a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, displayed as 1000 separate pieces in 1000 separate bags; a French road map cut into the shape of Syria and a performance entitled ‘drawing a line in the sand’ where Hamblen will act out this phrase for five hours a day, across six days during the exhibition.
