The acclaimed dance thriller The Car Man comes to The Lowry for a short run at the end of this month. One of the most popular plays by the choreographer Matthew Bourne, it returns to Salford on its first tour in eight years. The play is a reimagining of Bizet’s opera Carmen (get it?), but with the action transplanted to a greasy spoon diner in 1960s America. The small town of Harmony is shaken by the arrival of the handsome Luca, the titular ‘Car Man’. The part will be played by both Jonathan Ollivier and Chris Trenfield, who were recently the leads in Bourne’s gender-swapped version of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. The performance also stars Bury-born Layton Williams, a former lead in Billy Elliot – the Musical.
