As everyone knows, Christmas begins in early November, and to make that official, there is the grand switch-on of the city’s Christmas lights in Albert Square. Throwing the big switch this year will be the self-styled affable comedian Jason Manford. Also appearing is ‘Life’s Too Short’ star Warwick Davis, ahead of starring in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Palace Theatre. The boy band Collabro, winners of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, will be performing their speciality: hits from Broadway shows. Lock up your daughters! Or maybe not. If that isn’t lowbrow enough, the stars of Shrek the Musical will be singing songs about ogres. Well, at least the night ends with fireworks. And Santa has his own Twitter account this year: @McrSanta. The switch-on marks the start of six weeks of council-organised festivities including the launch of the famous markets on Friday 14 November 2014.

Fri 7 Nov, Albert Square, Manchester, M2 5RT, From 7.30pm, Tickets are not required but space may be limited, www.manchester.gov.uk.
